May 14, 2011

Tragically, young children die each year in home fires attempting to hide from the fire and smoke. Firefighters find children in closets, under beds and in corners. Studies have shown that if we teach fire safety lessons to
pre-kindergarten children, it creates a bigger impact and they bring these valuable lessons home to their families.

On May 14, 2011, The Fire Prevention Association of Nevada (FPAN) conducted a Sesame Street “Train the Trainer” workshop for 80 attendees at the Summerlin Library Theatre. The training focused on how to teach fire safety to pre-school age children in the longest running Sesame Street Fire Safety Education program in the country.

The fire safety workshop was offered to early childhood development teachers, preschool teachers, and child care providers. Fire safety behaviors were taught utilizing Sesame Street character puppets and drama students from Harney Middle School. The students played both teacher and pre-school toddlers providing innovative musical themes, for pre-school-age fire & life safety lessons.

FPAN received great evaluations by the attendees and FPAN was also able to honor 2 “Fire Safety Heroes”, Kisha Gray from Keys Kids Childcare and Tami Campbell from TLC4Kidz Family Home Care for successfully completing their master record sheets for 2010.

Serving on the E-board committee from Clark County Fire Department (CCFD) were Deputy Fire Marshal Kay Eggers, Fire Inspector Steve Dieter, and Fire Inspector Sylvia Lee. Fire Inspector Judy Gibson ran registration and Fire Inspector Mike Stafford volunteered his time the day of the event. Serving from Las Vegas Fire and Rescue (LVFR) were Public Education/Public Information Officer, Tim Szymanski, Fire Inspector Norm Peterson and Fire Inspector Reginald McCollins. Fire Inspector Mike Svoboda volunteered his time the day of the event. Serving from North Las Vegas Fire Department was Public Education Specialist, Bev Bolton. Also serving on the E-board committee were Teresa Jackson, Director of Business Development with Certified Fire, Charlotte Hansen and Nicole Nichol with the State of Nevada Bureau of Services for Child Care.
