NORTH LAKE TAHOE FIRE PROTECTION DISTRICT JOB OPPORTUNITY: FIRE MARSHAL

Salary Range: $105,000.00 to $156,000.00 Annually

 

DESCRIPTION:

Under the direction of the District Fire Chief, the District Fire Marshal administers the Fire Prevention Division. The fire marshal, directly or through subordinates, enforces the applicable adopted fire codes/standards, Nevada State Laws pertaining to fire codes and safety issues and provides the direct community interface concerning fire code and safety issues.

 

SOME EXAMPLES OF DUTIES ARE, BUT NOT LIMITED TO:

The fire marshal’s duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Manage all services and activities of the Fire Prevention Division, including fire prevention and inspections of commercial, industrial, and residential property; assign, supervise and review inspection and enforcement work performed by personnel; recommend and administer policies and procedures.
  • Provides comprehensive inspection reports, issues violation notices, and conducts appropriate follow up as required to ensure compliance.
  • Conducts plan(s) review(s) to ensure that the final construction and installation comply with state and local codes and nationally recognized standards.
  • Consult with architects, builders, engineers, and developers on matters pertaining to fire protection and fire safety requirements
  • Conducts fire investigations to determine fire origin in order to identify fire cause and complete detailed reports.
  • Provide staff assistance to the executive staff; participate on a variety of boards, commissions, and committees; prepare and present staff reports and other necessary correspondence.
  • Assist in developing and implementing goals, objectives, and priorities for the division; identify resource needs; creation and implementation of policies and procedures and standard operating
  • Assess and monitor workload, administrative and support systems, and internal reporting relationships; identify opportunities for improvement, direct and implement changes.
  • Participate in the development and administration of the division budget; provide a forecast of funds needed for staffing, equipment, materials, and supplies; approve expenditures and implement budgetary adjustments as appropriate and necessary.

 

  • Develop and implement procedural methods and practices for reviewing plans, conducting inspections, investigating incidents and related activities as required; provide staff with continued technical support and training as required.
  • Provide education to the public in matters of fire, life safety, and vegetation management within the wildland Urban Interface.
  • Respond to and resolves difficult and sensitive citizen inquiries and

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with a bachelor’s degree in Fire Protection Engineering/Technology or a related field is required. Ten or more years of progressively professional experience in fire prevention, code enforcement, and fire investigation; five of which shall be supervisory level.

 

Or any equivalent combination of education, experience, and training that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.

 

 

LICENSES/CERTIFICATIONS:

  • Possession of a current, valid Nevada Driver’s license, or the ability to obtain within six months of hire date, is required and must be maintained as a condition of employment.
  • International Code Council Fire Inspector I and II or
  • International Code Council Fire Plans Examiner or
  • Fire Marshal certification through Nevada State Fire Marshal or International Code Council preferred
  • Ability to meet Defensible Space Inspector requirements as defined by the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency (TRPA) Code of Ordinances within one year of hire date.
  • International Association of Arson Investigators Fire Investigator certification or
  • National Wildfire Coordinating Group, FI-210 investigation
  • National Wildfire Coordinating Group, FI-310 certification is highly desirable
  • Possession of a certificate in CPR is highly

 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Speak publicly and give presentation to the public and other targeted
  • Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with those contacted in the course of duties

WORKING CONDITIONS: The noise level in the work environment is usually moderately quiet while in the office and moderately loud when in the field. The employee may be required to work in outside weather conditions, in wet and/or sever winter conditions, in high, precarious places, or near fumes, airborne particles, and/or toxic or caustic chemicals. Position is regularly required to travel by car to participate in inspections, investigations, and meet with community members and colleagues. This position may be required to work a non-traditional work schedule, including working beyond typically scheduled work hours, on weekends and holidays, and return to duty during emergencies.
